Why Yale? My singular aim while interviewing for residency was to get the best education possible, bar none. After rotating at Yale for a month as a med student, it was an easy choice, with the vast opportunities and resources for education, research, and care for diverse and complex patients. The world-class faculty, renowned experts in their specialties, were friendly, approachable, and invested in resident education. But despite my carpe diem/make-every-chance-count attitude, I hoped for a program that would accept me coming from a different cultural setting in India. The residents, a close-knit bunch who spent most of the pre-interview dinner making jokes at each other, welcomed me with open arms (metaphorically speaking, because COVID.) Moving from my country in the middle of a pandemic was not without obstacles, but the encouragement, thoughtfulness, and inspiration from my program leadership propelled me forth, and now thanks to them I have a home away from home.
